Immaculate Conception Catholic School:
Consistently Raising the Bar of Achievement

ICS' Challenging Curriculum

ICS curriculum provides an academic program of excellence firmly rooted in the teachings of the Catholic Christian faith. Daily we include religious
instruction, sacramental preparation, and liturgical celebrations.  In addition to religious education, the curriculum includes Language Arts, Mathematics,
Social Studies, and Science, as well as classes in Art, Music, Physical Education, Library Skills, Computer Skills, and a second language.

Testing Above the Rest

Picture
We are proud of our students’ academic accomplishments. The partnership of involved parents with excellent teachers produces a level of high standards which prepares our students for whatever lies ahead. Immaculate Conception students at all grade levels consistently perform well above grade equivalency on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS).  For more information on this testing system, visit the ITBS website.

Our students in 7th and 8th grades also take the ACT Explore Test.  This standardized test, taken nationally by 8th and 9th graders, is a great way to get a head start on the ACT they are likely to take as they prepare for college. The results show subjects in which a student excels, and those which need improvement.   ICS 8th grade students consistently score well above the national 8th grade benchmark scores, and exceed college readiness standards in most subjects.  Even our 7th grade students are only slightly below the national 8th grade benchmark scores!  Click here to view the 2011 report of Immaculate Conception School Explore Test results.

New for the 2011-12 school year, ICS will introduce a chapter of the National Junior Honor Society.  We are pleased that our students' accomplishments will now be recognized through this prestigious national organization.  Visit the NJHS website for more information, and check back for more details about the ICS chapter!

Immaculate Conception School...Where Faith and Learning go Hand in Hand.

We are a Catholic school, serving children from Kindergarten through 8th grade. Our mission is to develop the spiritual, intellectual, physical, and social growth of each child by providing a quality educational experience in an atmosphere of faith.

Our curriculum includes Religion, Language Arts (Phonics, Reading/Literature, English Grammar/Composition, and Spelling/Vocabulary), Handwriting, Mathematics (including Pre-Algebra and Algebra I for qualified junior high students), Science, Social Studies/Geography/History, Safety/Drug Awareness, Spanish, Family Life, Music, Art, Computer Education, and Physical Education along with Safety and Drug Awareness programs.

ICS is a feeder school to our diocesan college preparatory high school, Pope John Paul II High School in Hendersonville, TN. Our students who attend JPII are consistently recognized for their academic success.    Regardless of where students will continue their education following ICS, they will be well prepared academically and socially with tools that will help them navigate the world of high school and beyond.

TEACHING FAITH AT ICS
Immaculate Conception School is a worshipping community - a school of faith for all faiths - and religion is the distinctive mark of every Catholic school. We provide daily religious instruction to all student, and each has the opportunity to play an important role in the celebration of weekly Mass, Holy Days and special liturgical celebrations. Children of all Christian traditions and all faiths are welcome; we learn about God together in a welcoming and inclusive environment where prayer is always an integral part of our day.

Anyone is welcome to attend Mass with the students and staff. The grades are grouped to allow the service to be tailored and made appropriate for their grade level. In addition, all grades come together on a regular basis to worship as a single school family.

Regularly scheduled services are:

Tuesdays 8:15 a.m.  > Kindergarten – 5th grades
Older students pair with the youngest as “Mass partners” to mentor appropriate behavior at Mass.
Thursdays 8:15 a.m. > 6th – 8th grades

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Religious education at Immaculate Conception is directed toward enabling the student’s faith to become a living, conscious and active part of their being. We help the students to develop attitudes, values and behavior consistent with the faith they profess.

Our religious education program includes preparation of our Catholic second graders for their First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Eighth graders also work throughout the year in preparation for their Confirmation. Students who are not Catholic are included in these preparations in ways which assist them on their own distinctive faith journeys.Beginning in third grade, ICS students have the opportunity to train for the Altar Server ministry. For six to eight months the novices train and prepare in a program that includes shadowing older servers at the school and a practicum experience in the Immaculate Conception parish chapel over the summer. Their training culminates with a special commissioning service where the young novices become fully commissioned servers. Servers are led by a Server Council comprised of the older and more experienced servers; they lead the training of novices and take other roles as sacristans and lead servers - all under the capable and dedicated leadership of Deacon Bob Berberich.

Our servers often assist with weekend Masses at Immaculate Conception Church, and an important part of that ministry is their role as “Watchers” during Adoration held on the first Saturday of each month. Servers are scheduled so that at least two are always present during this important period of prayer and reflection.

One with the Community: Teaching a Heart of Giving to All Students

Serving our community is part of our call to the Christian way of life, and Immaculate Conception's students become involved at all grade levels. Teaching our children the value of serving others is another way of demonstrating how we can all contribute our time and talents to those in need.

How Our Students Serve

  • Citizenship Recognition: We recognize good citizenship.  A "super citizen" is rewarded with a lunch with the Principal each report period.
  • ICS Store: Fifth grade students run a store.  All proceeds are donated to Immaculate Conception's Haiti Mission.
  • Pet Food Drive: Middle school collects pet food for the Humane Society.
  • Coat Drive: Coats collected go to Caring Choices, Safe House, and Room in the Inn Program.
  • Urban Ministries Food Drive: Each month students collect food for Urban Ministries, make holiday baskets for Immaculate Conception and Catholic Charities, and extra food is given to Loaves & Fishes.
  • Nursing Home Visits: Students participate in visits to our local nursing homes.
  • Pennies for Pasta: Students collect pennies to donate to the Leukemia Society.  The class with the most pennies enjoyed a pasta dinner at Olive Garden.
  • Jump Rope for Heart: An educational fundraiser to help save lives, teach physical fitness, and promote the value of community service.  This event shows students that they can contribute to their community's welfare.
  • Glasses for Haiti Mission: Glasses are collected and donated to Immaculate Conception's Haiti Mission.
  • Breakfast at the Day Shelter: 7th graders cook breakfast at the local day shelter for the homeless.
  • Thanksgiving Food Baskets: Thanksgiving day baskets were made for families in need.
  • Christmas Angels: In lieu of a Christmas gift exchange, 8th grade students went on a field trip to purchase gifts for needy children.
  • Shoes for Needy Families: Students collect shoes for needy families.
  • Recycling Program: The fourth grade class leads a recycling program for aluminum, paper, and card board.  All proceeds go to Immaculate Conception's Chiapas Mission.
